ADULT PROGRAMMING
At Congregation Or Shalom, we believe that learning is a lifelong process - a privilege and an obligation. By instilling a love of learning, maximizing inquiry and encouraging lifelong Jewish study, we encourage people of all ages to seek a significant connection to their Judaism. Our offerings include: Adult Hebrew, Text Study, Religious School for Adults and even cooking with the Rabbi. Additionally, we offer theater outings, speakers and tours.
CARING COMMITTEE
Our goal is to provide support and comfort to members of our congregation when birth, illnesses or death affects their family. We coordinate and/or cook meals, arrange carpoools, attend shivahs, and visit the sick. The time commitment is minimal. Members of the committee are assigned 1-2 weeks throughout the year. During your week, you will help to coordinate what may be needed with the help of other committee members. As a group, we may only meet once or twice a year. If you are comfortable leading a Minyan, or are interested in providing a meal, please let us know.
EDUCATION COMMITTEE
Help out our religious school! Join a group of adults who work with the Director of Education on pertinent issues such as: creating and modifying policies, resolving educational issues, and scheduling changes. The committee meets 3-4 times each year in the early evening. Committee members help with the annual fall book fair, the Purim carnival and the Passover candy sale.
FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE
Energy, ideas and a willingness to invest some time and effort to raise funds for our congregation are the prerequisites to serving on this committee. We are open to new ideas for social events and fundraisers. Help Or Shalom while you make new friends and create programs which bind us together as a community.
LIBRARY
The library at Or Shalom is open once a month to all children during their Hebrew school class. The library is completely run by volunteers. We are always looking for people to help re-shelve, catalogue, and check-out books. The time commitment is minimal and working with the kids in the library is lots of fun.
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
Help us develop and implement ideas that will attract new members to the Or Shalom family. Our focus is to ensure that all members feel welcome and to provide the guidance for congregants to become involved in the exceptional educational, spiritual and communal activities Or Shalom has to offer. Our ultimate goal is the continued growth of the Or Shalom family and more importantly, the retention of our membership for generations to come.
RELIGION AND RITUAL COMMITTEE
The Religion and Ritual Committee coordinates all religious services associated with the High Holidays; starting with Slichot and ending with Simchat Torah. This includes assignment of aliyot, working out logistics for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services and organizing volunteers (greeters, ushers, transportation of equipment) for the services. A volunteer on this committee would expect to meet with the committee for a couple of hours before the high holidays and a few hours on each day of the holidays.
SOCIAL ACTION
The mission of the Or Shalom Social Action Committee is to make a positive impact on the community at large through congregant participation in charitable events. In doing so, we teach our youth, through example, the importance of mitzvot and tzedakah. The committee meets the first Wednesday of each month and plans events such as Passover and Rosh Hashanah food deliveries, blood drives and our annual Christmas PADS Shelter event.
YOUTH COMMITTEE
The Youth Committee oversees and develops youth group and social action programs for children in grades 4-12. Our goal is to foster a sense of Jewish community and allow time for children to bond outside of the classroom.
HOUSE AND GROUNDS
The House and Grounds committee works closely with the Executive Director and helps ensure that the physical issues associated with with the building and grounds are addressed in a timely manner. Rick Veren is the Chair of this committee and would appreciate volunteer help on an as needed basis.
