Congregation Or Shalom strongly believes in the importance of informal learning opportunities for its students, in addition to our structured class time. As such we have developed youth groups for students from 9-18 years of age:
Junior Youth Group offers programs to 4th/5th grade students approximately every other month during the school year, while our 6th-8th grade youth group has an event or activity monthly. Youth group provides opportunities for our students to participate with other Jewish youth in social activities and social action programs. Some programs are conveniently scheduled directly following Hebrew school like pizza party/game nights. Other programming occurs on weekends including bowling, trips to a chocolate factory, hay rides etc.
The “Jew Crew”, our high school youth group, (named by our students) is open to 9th-12th graders. The Jew Crew elects a group of student leaders who help plan and organize events, under the warm and energetic guidance of our high school youth group advisor. In addition to events exclusively for Or Shalom High school students, the Jew Crew also plans and participates in joint retreats at OSRUI with students from Beth Am and Temple Chai.
Or Shalom Youth are members of NFTY-CAR (National Federation of Temple Youth – Chicago Area Region) and participate in events throughout the year with high school students from Reform synagogues all over Chicagoland.
