The Or Shalom Library maintains a collection of Jewish literature to serve as a reference and lending resource for our congregants and school. It seeks to develop a collection that not only supports the needs of the student, but also provides a broad range of pleasure reading for the individual.
Thanks to the generosity of many Or Shalom families, our Library houses a wide variety of adult and children Jewish fiction and non-fiction books. The library is currently open two Sundays and one weekday each month during school hours. Students have the opportunity to check out one book each month when their class visits the Library. Adults and older teens are welcome to check out books when the library is open.
Donations to the library can be made in several ways.
· Families can make a $50 contribution in honor of their child's Bar/ Bat Mitzvah through the Bima Book Basket Program. A beautiful Library Basket will decorate the Bimah during their child's service. A card is attached to the basket indicating the generous donation. Many families have taken advantage of this lovely tribute to their children.
· Donations can also be made during the fall book fair by designating that a book purchase is for the Library. A book plate indicates who made the donation and for what occasion.
· Finally, the Library accepts donations of Jewish-themed titles from congregants and friends either purchased new or from their own private collections. Donated books can be left in the library with a note attached.
The library is completely staffed by volunteers. We are continuously looking for people to help re-shelve, catalogue, and check-out books. The time commitment is minimal and working with the children in the library is rewarding and fun.
