High Holy Days 5784 / 2023

We are so excited to gather together once again to celebrate our New Year and all that it can bring! Each year, when we hear the call of the shofar, when we taste our apples and honey, when we smell the foods of our holiday gatherings, and when we see the faces of family and friends and community, we invite ourselves to return to a state of mind that we reserve for our High Holy Days. This is the time to be in touch with the person that each of us strives to be, and it provides us the chance to re-align our habits and choices to become a bit more like that person.

These holidays also give us the chance to connect and reconnect with family and friends and community. Whether you have just joined our Or Shalom family or have been here since the beginning or anywhere in between, we look forward to welcoming you home for the holidays. In order to celebrate in our home, we do need to have two different service shifts for many of the services, but we will also be experimenting with creating space elsewhere in our building for gathering, so we can connect with one another.

We wish you a happy, healthy, meaningful New Year, filled with love and joy! See you soon!!

FAMILY SERVICES & EXPERIENCES

There will be multiple opportunities for families with children to participate in High Holy Day worship together this year:

Our Family Service and Experience will be offered on Rosh Hashanah at 2:45PM and on Yom Kippur at 2:30PM. This service is intended for families with children in Kindergarten through 6th Grade. Together, as a community of school-aged families, we will experience the kavanah (intention) and meaning of the High Holy Day liturgy through song, mindful moments, sharing, and a skit from our clergy players!

Our Young Children's Service will be offered on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur at 9AM and is intended for families with children age 0-5. Young Children's services are open to the community and do not require a guest ticket purchase. Join us to sing, dance, and experience the rhythm of the High Holy Days with our young children’s community! This is a high-energy service that will bring the themes of the holiday season to life for our youngest pray-ers.

Our Rosh Hashanah Family Picnic & Tashlich will be on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, September 17 at 12:30pm. We look forward to sharing the holiday as a Jcommunity even when there is no regular Jclass! The picnic will be at 12:30pm and the Tashlich Service will start at 1:15pm. We will meet at Century Park behind Brookdale Senior Living (across from our building). Please park at Or Shalom, walk east to the crosswalk on Hawthorn Parkway, and use the crosswalk to cross towards Brookdale Place. Walk through the Brookdale parking lot to the grassy area in Century Park. Bring your own picnic meal and picnic blanket. Comfortable picnic attire encouraged. All are welcome!

SAVE-THE-DATE!

Please join us for our all-school family event, Schmear in the Sukkah on Sunday, October 1 at 10:00AM.

All J2 families are invited to join us to fulfill the mitzvah of leisheiv ba-sukkah, dwelling in the sukkah, with bagels and shmear! We will enjoy bagels and each other’s company during our normal tefillah block, from 10:00-11:00am, instead of tefillah. While your children are in class (8:45-10:00am early session, 11:00am-12:30pm late session), join us for some sipping in the sukkah, a chance to enjoy a cup of coffee and get to know other members of our parent community!
